Memories

“Was there ever a thing as pure memory? I doubt it. Even when we convince ourselves that we’re being dispassionate, sticking to the bald facts with no self-serving decorations or omissions, pure memory remains as elusive as a bar of wet soap. Or it does me, after a lifetime of blending experience with imagination.” John Le Carre
Thanksgiving family gatherings can provide the truth of this idea.

A Fun Possibility

What if…what if all your favorite people happened by this table and were invited to stay for a laugh, some food and drink? Wouldn’t that just be grand? Even better, what if these people included all your far off friends or those who are now gone to another place? Sprinkle the jokesters and storytellers all around for best effect. Wouldn’t it truly be grand?

On Being A Boss

“I’ve got this boss thing all figured out.”
Treat subordinates as grown-ups – they’ll grow up. Kill grimness with laughter. Maintain an atmosphere of informality. Encourage exuberance. Get rid of sad dogs who spread gloom. Sack incurable politicians... Oglilvy told me all this

Some Of the Richest Times

When a marvelous dinner has been prepared, the table set, and loved ones are present, the choice nugget is the after dinner conversation.
It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it goes like this. No one is shoveling food in his mouth and no one rushes off to do the dishes; instead, people settle back in their chairs and talk, tell stories, listen to each other, and enjoy the humor that emerges. It is utter downtime and likely to be the only part of the dinner that is truly remembered.

We Can Tell By The Eyes

You talked to him and he was there. You can tell about a person by the eyes. Listeners make warm eye contact and you feel heard. Humor is seen by the movements and the slight crinkles at the corners. You’re acknowledged by a lingering look. Concern is conveyed by a sad narrowing for a brief second.
Eyes, they say it all.

Clueless People

“One of the advantages of growing up is that no one tells you anymore that you’re too smart for your own good.”
That’s true.

Meaning of Life

“I have been asking myself why I’m here most of my life. If there’s a purpose I don’t care anymore. I’m seventy-four. I’m on my way out. Let the young people learn the hard way, like I did. No one ever told me anything.”  Frank Donofrio, a barber
And so, enjoy your day and don’t tell nobody nothin’.

Leisure Time

“The best intelligence test is what we do with our leisure.” Laurence J. Peter

Life’s Ups and Downs

“The beauty is that through disappointment you can gain clarity, and with clarity comes conviction and true originality.”
